Jaguars have a large chunk of their payroll in their starting defensive line

Although Tyson Alualu's deal hasn't been finalized, it will be worth around $18 million in guaranteed money. That's not even including other bonuses or game salary. Factoring in the remaining guaranteed money owed to DE Derrick Harvey, and it's quite apparent the Jaguars have a large chunk of their payroll in their starting defensive line.

When the Jaguars have spent money like drunken sailors before, it has usually resulted with egg all over their faces. In the late 90's, the Jaguars went out and mortgaged their future to get to the Super Bowl. Instead, high profile signings like Bryce Paup and Hardy Nickerson failed to do much of anything. Then in 2008, the front office once again drank the Kool-Aid and threw out more monopoly money to the likes of Jerry Porter and Cleo Lemon. Not to mention mortgaging their 2008 draft for Derrick Harvey.

Just two years later the Jaguars are on the verge of doing it yet again. Once Tyson Alualu signs on the dotted line, the Jaguars will have spent almost $30 million in guaranteed money this off season on two players who haven't done anything in a Jaguars uniform. Worse yet, one is coming off ACL surgery and the other has never played a down in the NFL before.

As far as getting an answer to the titular question, we won't be able to give any David Garrard real answer until several months from now. I fully expect the first few weeks of the regular season to have its fair share of disappointing moments. The hype that is surrounding the two is tremendous and will only magnify any mistakes that are made. When Halloween rolls around, we'll know where those two stand. By then, we'll know how well Kampman's knee is holding up and how well Alualu will have adjusted to the pro game.

As far as Alualu goes, I do believe he'll be great in the teal and black. He's clearly a talented player who has a drive to get better, and you can't ask for more from a Top Ten pick. However, the Kampman signing does have me on edge. I just keep thinking of when the Jaguars signed Bryce Paup. The similarities are scary and certainly a cause for concern. Both were 30 year old sack artists who began to experience a decline in production. However, the general consensus was they had enough left in the tank to make it a worthwhile signing. Paup had 8 sacks in two years and still ranks as the Jaguars biggest misstep in free agency.

David Gerrard has not stepped up his signal calling and many feel he regressed in 2009. The Jaguars football jerseys do have pro-bowler Maurice Jones-Drew, but the offensive line is gong to have to do a better job of pass protecting for the running game to really reach its potential.

The real problem for the team in 2009 was a defense that recorded only 14 sacks, the fifth-lowest in NFL history since sacks became an official stat. At any level of football, the lack of a pass rush places immense pressure on the secondary and if an NFL quaterback has more than 3.5 seconds to pass, he will certainly have at least one wide open wide receiver.

Reflecting the lack of a pass rush is the fact that Jacksonville is 0-8 against the spread against weak passing teams gaining just 5.7 or fewer yards per pass attempt. So even the poor passing teams designed game plans to take advantage of the weak Jacksonville defense.

As a result, Jacksonville spent the first four picks of this year's draft on the line and also traded for middle LB Kirk Morrison, who had 133 tackles and two sacks with the Raiders last season. These are all moves in the right direction, but it will take at least a season for the rookies to develop and for the defensive chemistry to be built before they can play as a top-level NFL defensive unit.

Everyone who has suited up for the new Jacksonville Jaguars jerseys, and everyone who has watched a practice from the stands, knows that training camp is hot.  Now, some numbers put that heat in context.

Minnesota Viking coach Brad Childress

It sounds funny to say the Minnesota Vikings running game must improve. Adrian Peterson  is possibly the best workhorse running back in the NFL. Peterson loses Chester Taylor but he gains a teammate that is very similar to his own running style in Toby Gerhart. Gerhart will be a perfect change of pace back even though he is similar to Peterson. Both backs love to initiate contact at the line of scrimmage but there is a difference.

Gerhart is a plowing back and Peterson is a banging back. Watch videos of Kevin Williams the two backs and the difference can be noticeable. Gerhart takes out his defensive backs by lowering his shoulder and plowing them under, while Adrian Peterson bangs the defender at the point of contact. Peterson is a more up and down runner and Gerhart is a low to the ground grinder. They will be perfect complements to each other and terrorize NFL secondaries.

Can Minnesota Vikings Phenomenal Young Receivers Continue to Play at a High Level?

The new Minnesota Vikings jerseys has an abundance of talent among the receivers also. Percy Harvin, despite injuries was huge reason for Minnesota's success in their 2009 NFL campaign. The major surprise was the emergence of Sidney Rice. Rice was spectacular throughout Minnesota's run to the playoff and became Brett Favre's go-to receiver in clutch situations.

new Minnesota Viking jerseys coach Brad Childress recently paid a visit to Brett Favre at his Mississippi home.

But the coach says he still does not know if the quarterback will return for another season with the Vikings. Childress told KFAN radio in the Minneapolis area: "I don't know if he's going to play next year and I don't know if he knows if he's going to play next year."

Childress says he wants Favre to make the best decision for himself.

The coach also believes that Favre's surgically repaired ankle will not factor into the 40-year-old's decision. Childress says Favre is running stadium steps in a weighted jacket to slim down.

Many expect Favre to return for a 20th NFL season. Childress says he would not be Sidney Rice surprised either way.

All other stories in Vikings camp figure to be overshadowed by the Brett Favre drama, which is exactly the way the venerable 40-year-old wants it. There is other intrigue if you look hard enough, however. With Chester Taylor now a Bear, it will be interesting to see how Brad Childress integrates rookie Toby Gerhart (Stanford) and/or newcomer Ryan Moats (ex-Texans) into the offense behind Adrian Peterson. On Leslie Frazier's defense, the play of an oft-maligned secondary will bear watching in Mankato.

Vikings ranked 5th in the NFL in scoring averaging

After 44 years of Vikings players staying at Gage Hall at Minnesota State Mankato for training camp, this year's team will move to the 1-year-old Julia Sears building. Players are to report the evening of July 29 (Thursday), with one workout the next day at 4 p.m., then two workouts on Saturday, one on Sunday and two on Monday.

Leading home run hitter in the Twins' organization is outfielder Joe Benson, who has 19 between Class AA New Britain and Class A Fort Myers.

The Timberwolves report sales of about 400 new season tickets from their "pay the pick" promotion that priced seats based on their NBA lottery pick (No. 4). That means those season tickets sell for $172 apiece.

The Wolves say they have an overall season-ticket renewal rate of about 85 percent on a full-season equivalent of nearly 6,000 tickets.

Autographed baseballs by the late George Steinbrenner, who included "The Boss" with his signature, are on sale for $899 apiece from Grandstand Sports.

Bloomington golfer Joe Stansberry, with rounds of 73-73 at the 160-year-old Panmure course in Barry, Scotland, qualified for the $2 million British Senior Open that begins Thursday at Carnoustie in Scotland. Stansberry, 54, will be paired with Gordon Brand and Mark Carnevale and tee off at 6:10 a.m. Minnesota time.

Former Gophers hockey captain Mike Vannelli, 26, who last season played in Dresden, Germany, this season will play in Stavanger, Norway.

Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, 49, still resides in Wayzata.

Randy Meier, 48, the former KSTP-TV and MSNBC-TV news anchor, is senior director of marketing and communications for Cambria.

Former St. Paul Saints pitcher John Van Cuyk, who pitched on the 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers team that won the National League pennant, died at 89 in Rochester, Minn., the other day.

Local author-Twins official scorer Stew Thornley was in Pasadena, Calif., last weekend to receive the 2010 Tony Salin Memorial Award for the Baseball Reliquary for "commitment to preserving baseball history."

Ex-North Star Ernie Hicke will be general manager and coach of the North American Hockey League expansion team in Port Huron, Mich.

Happy birthday: Ex-Twin Tony Oliva turned 72 on Tuesday. Tony is down 10 pounds and intends to lose another 10.

Marty Springstead, 73, who spent 50 years in organized baseball as an umpire and umpire supervisor, is featured speaker at a banquet tonight at Manny's Steakhouse in downtown Minneapolis.

Tartan grad Scott Brown, 36, pitches and catches for the U.S. slow-pitch softball team that on Saturday will play Team Canada in Oklahoma City on ESPN.

Southern Idaho baseball coach Boomer Walker was in town the other day Kevin Williams  scouting Minnesota prep players.

A little birdie says plans are under way for one of Brett Favre's children to enroll at a private school in Wayzata this fall.

Ben Marshall, a star defenseman from Mahtomedi who has committed to the Gophers hockey team, seriously injured a wrist when shoved into the boards at the Detroit Red Wings' developmental camp the other day. Plans are for Marshall to play for Omaha in the U.S. Hockey League this season, then to join the Gophers for the 2011-12 season.

If one issue can be resolved and former Gophers All-America golfer John Harris is announced as the Gophers' director of golf, look for more native Minnesotans to end up playing for their home state

The 2009 playoff run for the Vikings ended in similar kick below the belt fashion to the 1998 playoff debacle when munchkin body double Gary Anderson shanked a gimme field goal giving the Atlanta Dirty Birds a gift ride to the Super Bowl.  Last season’s overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Saints was just as heart wrenching for Vikings fans.  Only this time it was real football players that cost them a shot at the ring when #4′s brain cramp interception and Adrian Peterson’s butterfingers cost the Vikings their first Super Bowl trip since 1977.

This season is playing out like a scene from “Groundhog Day” as Favre is yet again contemplating retirement following offseason ankle surgery.  It appears that its just a ploy to avoid training camp and more of the melodramatic from the drama queen country boy.   I fully expect Brett to have his wranglers packed for training camp in Mankato by mid-August and  reports have surfaced that head coach Brad Childress made a trip the casa Favre in South Carolina this week.  Its tough to argue with the Vikings football jerseys allowing the old war horse to call the shots after he posted arguably the best season in his 11-year career throwing for 4,200 yards, 33 touchdowns and a shockingly low 7 interceptions.

In 2009, the Vikings ranked 5th in the NFL in scoring averaging an impressive 29 points per game.  Favre’s presence had rippling effects on the entire receiving corps and WR Sidney Rice, who had previously be criticized for poor work ethic, had a breakout season.

Rice finished with 1,312 yards, eight touchdowns on 83 catches, and a ticket to the Pro Bowl.  That is a spectacular jump after totaling only 46 receptions in his first two NFL seasons.  The 23 year old is an ideal red zone threat at 6’4 and should be a top 10-15 fantasy WR heading into his 4th NFL season.  Rookie Percy Harvin battled migraines that cost him playing time in weeks 14/15 but he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field and  finished with 790 receiving yards, 135 rushing yards, six touchdowns and a pair of return touchdowns. TE Visanthe Shiancoe was a red zone monster last season finishing with 11 touchdowns.  However, in his past two seasons he has averaged only 600 yds/season (under 40 yds/game) which makes him a lower end TE1 and a guy that could easily slip to a TE2 as the weekly fantasy production with be up and down.

The running game took a slight step back last season as Minnesota finished 13th in the NFL (120 yards per game).

After averaging 110 yds/game, AP regressed a bit in 2009 (86 yards per game) but he did lead the league with 18 touchdowns.  Running mate Chester Taylor (727 total yards, 2 TDs) signed with division rival Chicago so Peterson should see more receptions and should dominate red zone carries provided he has solved the fumbling issues which led has caused him to give the opposition the ball an unbelievable 16 times over the past two seasons. Peterson has been working with a sand-filled, 14-pound football in order to improve his ball security.  Rookie second round pick Toby Gerhart will likely serve as AP’s backup.  The 2009 Heisman runner-up could be used in the red zone as the 6’0/231 pounder posted an amazing 28 TDs in  his senior season at Stanford.  He also ran an impressive 4.53 at the combine and finished second in the nation, behind Ryan Mathews, in rushing yards. Gerhart will be a wise handcuff pick late in drafts for all AP owners.  The more AP fumbles the more action Gerhart will see in the red zone.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson

Todd Glocke, Darin Troftgruben, Diggz Garza and Herman Abrams made the relatively short trip to Kiln on Saturday, and spent some time at the Broke Spoke – a bar frequented by many fans of Favre's. The men also checked out Brett Favre Field at Hancock High.

"This trip has just been so amazing, and (Saturday) was no different," Troftgruben said. "I know I'll never forget this trip."

The four Minnesotans are planning to head back to the Tom Brady Twin Cities area today – but don't be surprised if you see them again sometime down the road.

The group has made it clear they intend to make trips like these annual events.

There's been plenty of rumors in terms of new Minnesota Vikings jerseys running back Adrian Peterson being unhappy with his current contract, which may or may not explain his absence from the team's three-day minicamp back in June.

Perhaps some clarity was provided on the matter when according to Judd Wes Welker Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Peterson, in an interview with an NFL Network reporter while at the ESPYs last Wednesday, was asked about his contract. Peterson said that the contract rumors could "be put to rest."

Personally, I think this is much ado about nothing, so to speak; yet Fred Taylor  like mos tthings NFL, there is usually something that doesn't always come out until later. IF there is additional news regarding Peterson and his contract situation, NFL Gridiron Gab will have it for you.

Minnesota Vikings Rivalry

The argument was made Tuesday in a filing with the Minnesota Court of Appeals. It is another step in the players' long legal battle against their four-game suspensions for violating the NFL's anti-doping policy. They tested positive for a banned diuretic in 2008.

Hennepin County Judge Gary Larson ruled in April that the NFL violated the three-day notice requirement in a Minnesota law on drug testing. But he said the Williamses had not been harmed by the violation.

Their attorneys say that ruling allows the NFL to benefit from violating the players' rights.

The Court of Appeals earlier rejected the NFL's Jared Allen request to expedite the case, so the defensive tackles may get to play the entire 2010 season.

Favre tells the magazine that enough damage has already been done to his body. The issue comes out on Friday.

The Vikings are still waiting to learn whether Favre will return for a 20th NFL season. His agent, Bus Cook, tells The Associated Press in an e-mail that he has no update on Favre's status.

Favre was scheduled to appear at the ESPY Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on E.J. Henderson Wednesday night. He has four nominations.

With the Bears struggling to find success ever since their Super Bowl Kevin Williams  run in 2006, it's no surprise that the Packers-Vikings rivalry was taken to a new level.

The fact that their once beloved quarterback now wears purple makes Packer-Nation bitter.

The Vikings football jerseys also have a tendency to sign former Packers players: Darren Sharper, Ryan Longwell, Brett Favre, and, most recently, Michael Montgomery.

Favre's signing with the Vikings had Packers fans around the world furious.

Randy Moss mooning the Lambeau crowd was nothing compared to Favre joining forces with the enemy.

The NFL’s weakening strongside

A quick prediction: By the end of the season, Jets fans will love Jason Taylor(notes),  the same guy who used to taunt them as a Dolphins star. Taylor may be near the end, but he still has enough athletic ability to cause problems for offenses. Fortunately for him, he joins a deep and smart linebacking corps, which means he won't have to play a lot. With Bart Scott(notes),  David Harris(notes),  Calvin Pace(notes)  and Bryan Thomas(notes),  the Jets have a great mix of players with enough talent to allow head coach Rex Ryan to run all his exotic blitzes. None of these guys are great, but all of them are very good.

Thanks to their acquisitions, the Jets have a dozen position players who have been to the Pro Bowl, the same Dustin Keller number as the Patriots. Sure, the Patriots hold the edge because they have Tom Brady, but trading up and getting Mark Sanchez last year gave the Jets a quarterback to build around. The year before, the Jets didn't blink when Brett Favre became available, and gave up a second-round choice to get him.

Of those dozen Pro Bowlers, seven came from outside the organization; some came at a high cost. Kris Jenkins was a $7 million-a-year nose tackle. Right tackle Damien Woody costs $5.1 million a season. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards makes $6.105 million this season. They paid Alan Faneca $8 million a year before cutting him after two seasons. Linebacker Bart Scott costs $8 million a year.

Before doing the Ferguson deal, the Jets had the 13th-highest payroll. If you count their signing bonuses, roster bonuses and salaries for their top 51 players, the Jets have a payroll of $112.7 million, a number that will go up as they try to lock up key players.

They are a victim of their success. It's going to cost more than $200 million in contracts to extend Ferguson, center Nick Mangold, linebacker David Harris and cornerback Darrelle Revis. Ferguson cost $60 million over six years as an extension. Mangold, perhaps the best center in the game, will cost more than $7 million a year. Revis wants top cornerback money, and the top cornerback makes $15 million a year.

The trickiest deal could be Harris, who finished right behind Scott as a Pro Bowl alternate last season. Can the Jets afford two $8 million linebackers? They'll have to try.

Jacksonville used its first four draft picks on defensive lineman

2010 is a pivotal year for head coach Jack Del Rio, quarterback David Garrard and the Jacksonville franchise itself. Amid the rumors of a possible relocation after two losing seasons and a disenchanted fan base, Del Rio and Garrard must have a strong start to save their jobs.

The Jags ranked 24th in the NFL in both points scored and points allowed in 2009. They were extremely inconsistent, looking great one week and pitiful the next. The offensive star is running back Maurice Jones-Drew. "Pocket Hercules" exploded for almost 1,400 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns in last season. He accomplished this without a very strong passing game to complement him. Mike Sims-Walker (this team loves the hyphen), had a strong year with 63 catches for 869 yards, but questions remain whether he is a true number one receiver. Garrard threw for a lot of yards in 2009, but had a poor touchdown to interception ratio of 15 to 10.

Jacksonville used its first four draft picks on defensive lineman, including questionable number ten overall selection Tyson Alualu. They are hoping these rookies, along with Aaron Kampman who came over from Green Bay, can help a defense that ranked 27th against the pass. Trading for Kirk Morrison at middle linebacker was a good decision, but it will remain to be seen if the defense can keep up with the prolific offenses of their division rivals.

If they played in a weaker division, the Jaguars football jerseys might have a chance in 2010. But with the offensive issues and the porous defense they have, it looks like they are destined for another 4th place finish in the AFC South.

After being selected with the 89th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, Ayodele went on to have four productive seasons for the new Jacksonville Jaguars jerseys. Unfortunately for him, Akin peaked in his second professional campaign and was out of favor by the end of the 2005 season. He then caught on with the Dallas Cowboys and, in his first experience in the 3-4, had another solid season before his production fell off the following year. In the past two seasons, he played for the Miami Dolphins with moderate overall results. Now in Denver, he's expected to continue to contribute in limited scenarios, but he could expand that role if his performance warrants it.

Denver Broncos

Moreno is arguably the best (only?) chance Denver has of providing fantasy owners with a stud player in 2010. But he has to improve his stamina in order to play well deep into the season and hold off veteran Correll Buckhalter.

In the Broncos' final four games last season, Moreno totaled just 173 rushing yards and averaged 2.7 yards per carry. He'll have to do better in order to provide fantasy owners with that finishing kick that they expect from a RB1.

Moreno also has to perform better in pass protection in order to stay on the field where he can be a factor in the receiving game. He showed progress in that area late last season and throughout the offseason, according to reports.

With an unsettled passing game, thanks to Marshall's departure and the setup for a QB battle among Kyle Orton, Quinn and Tebow, the Broncos jerseys are expected to lean on their running attack this season. That should be the case at least until the passing game forges an identity.

Something to keep an eye on, though, is the health of Denver's offensive line. Obviously, Moreno needs them to be 100 percent in order to reach his full potential. Right now, that isn't the case.

Tackle Ryan Clady (patellar tendon surgery) is still questionable for Week 1, and veteran center Russ Hochstein (knee) isn't completely healthy. But if those guys check out OK in camp, it will boost Moreno's value. In our latest rankings update, Moreno was 12th among running backs, so he's right on the border of becoming a legitimate No. 1 back.

The new Denver Broncos jerseys have long had a tradition of having a well balanced offense that evolved over the decades. Ironically enough the Broncos top ten receivers fall in line for the most part along the statistical line.

This is a straight up take that is all encompassing based on statistical standings.

For good measure other noteworthy mentions are thrown in for deeper thought and review.

Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders

Welcome to Bland Ballpark where the team has a case of the Mondays
"It looks like an office park," says a very confused Dabbo while looking up at the cinderblock fortress that is Nationals Park, home of the craptastic Washington Nationals. Yeah, it's pretty bland, like dry white toast bland.

I'm surprised there weren't cubicles built into the bleachers. As one of the newest ballparks in the Majors, the blandness of the design is disappointing, particularly having just visited The Jake and PNC with Camden next on the itinerary.

To Baltimore Ravens  ... The long way
The distance between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore isn't terribly long. Unfortunately, Washington, D.C. city planners designed the road system on an Etch-A-Sketch during an earthquake, so it took 45 minutes to get out of the city.

Mercifully, the notorious traffic between the two metropolitan areas was light, even for a Saturday night, so we only missed the first inning of the Orioles -Mets tilt. On the way into the stadium I managed to snag a photo with the Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders (all of life is timing). Side note to Dabbo's fiancé: Only I had my photo taken, Colin looked at his shoes the whole time. I swear.

I'm not sure what I can say about Camden Yards that hasn't been said a million times before. Combine my assessment of The Jake with PNC and that about nails it.
